Leaping Numbers is back!
You might remember a Leaping Numbers event in February of 2024 that culminated on Leap Day.
This is something new!
Introducing: Leaping Numbers Seasons!
This is Leaping Numbers: Season One
Each day the numbers will come leaping in to form a pattern – but one number will be missing. Use you pattern skills to find the missing number. Then add that number to the Mystery Pattern Catcher which you can download below.
Each time you add a number to the Mystery Pattern Catcher you will realize that it is forming a pattern of its own! And that pattern is pointing toward the Mystery Number in the very last box – in Day 21.
Every day there is a fun, new pattern – and every day the Main Mystery Pattern grows with more and more clues. What is the number in Day 21? That is the question throughout Season 1.
Can you solve the pattern and find the mystery number – before it appears on Day 21?

Tip #9
The videos are called “Days”
That may sound a little funny, especially since I release several “Days” at once. Below, you’ll see that I release the first four Days (videos) all at once. Then I release them 2 at a time from there. However, from a big picture view this works much, much better – and it gives it more lasting power over the years.
Plus, in the long run, it adds a lot of flexibility for everyone.
So video 1 (with pattern 1) is called Day 1.
Video 2 (with pattern 2) is called Day 2.
That means you can cover several “Days” in one sitting if you want.
Tip #8
The videos are short: about 75 seconds
The videos are short. The numbers come leaping in right away and form the pattern with the missing number. You will probably click the pause button about 35 seconds into the video and ask, “What do you think the missing number is?”
Tip #7
What grades / ages is this best for?
I love this question because it reveals so much about numbers – and how patterns are so universal.
I recommend this for: Grades 1-12 and beyond … all the way through Adults.
1st Grade, 2nd Grade, 3rd Grade, 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade … All the way through adults who will enjoy it, too!
Teachers – this is your chance to enjoy solving a pattern!
The 2 adult pattern testers had very, very rich conversations about numbers and patterns.
Tip #6
The Mystery Number has never been found in the first week of a Leaping Numbers Challenge.
That might change this season!
The Mystery Pattern Testers came very, very close to solving it in the first week. They found many key details, discovered many clues, and sandwiched together a lot of great thinking.
Tip #5
How you watch it is very flexible.
Some people will watch the videos as soon as they are posted each day. This is a very fun way to do it, because you can see if you can solve it right away.
However – there are many different ways to experience Leaping Numbers: Season 1
- Watch the videos the day they come out; or
- Watch just one video each day; or
- Watch the videos on days when you are able to; or
- You might be discovering Leaping Numbers after all the videos have been posted. In that case, watch them at any speed you want.
Tip #4
You can send me your quotes and updates.
This, of course, is completely optional. I read every single reader reply that comes to me. I can’t write back to every single one, because there are so many, but I do read each one carefully. While I won’t be able to publish all of them, I’d love to share a few gems so you can hear what is happening in other parts of the world.
Teachers, the best way to send a quote is with following information:
- Grade Level
- Where your school is
- Thoughts
- optional: Any predictions about what Day 21 number might be
Example 1
“We are a 3rd grade class from New Zealand. We love Leaping Numbers because… We noticed… So we think… ”
(Teachers, please include you first name and last initial.)
Example 2
“My 4th grade class from Connecticut just tried Leaping Numbers for the first time today and the room exploded with rich math talk. Here are 3 quotes from the class…
“This is great!”
“I wonder what the mystery number is?”
“I think I just found a pattern.”
(Teachers, please include you first name and last initial.)
