THE REVEAL – THE DAY 21 MYSTERY NUMBER
***Can you find it before Day 21?
Steve’s Season 2 Tips
Tip #1 – Watch the video for teachers to see how it works.
The video is short and explains everything. You’ll see examples, the timeline, and how it works. In a few short minutes, you’ll fully understand Leaping Numbers. Here is the video.
Tip #2 – Definitely download the Mystery Pattern Catcher!
Use the blue download button above to download it. Then make sure each student has their own copy. With each video, students can use their copy to write down the new number. If you want, you can also print a large poster-size copy to post in your classroom.
Tip #3 – Watch the Leaping Numbers videos the day they come out.
While it’s not necessary to see the videos the day they come out – after all, many of you are reading this after the season has concluded, and Leaping Numbers works really well at any time – there is something very fun about watching them during the season. It’s fun to be part of an event, knowing that many other classes around the world are also watching them at the same time. Many classes are racing to see who can find the Mystery Number first. This also makes it fun to invite other classes in your school to join Leaping Numbers so you can talk about the latest pattern that has come out – and predict what might be next!
Tip #4 – Pause the videos whenever you want.
The best part of any educational video is the pause button. Whenever you pause a video, you open up space for rich discussion. There is time to think, predict, and discuss. This may be especially useful in the daily videos. Pausing the video will allow you to ask, “What number do you think will be next?”
Tip #5 – Ask students to explain what is happening in the pattern.
In both the daily patterns – and the main Mystery Pattern on the Mystery Pattern Catcher – your students will be thinking about the missing numbers. Be sure to ask your students to explain what is happening in the pattern.
“What do you notice?”
“What is happening?”
“What is the missing number?”
“Why do you think so?”
You also have many opportunities to extend the pattern if you choose to do so. You could ask students what number would come next if the video continued, or what number would come before the pattern.
Tip #6 – Your students will start predicting what number will come next in the Mystery Pattern.
As ideas emerge on the Mystery Pattern Catcher, your students will think ahead about what number will be next. This means they will also be predicting what number will be the answer in the next daily pattern. When they have a prediction about what is coming next in the main pattern, they will watch the daily videos in a new light – to see if their prediction is correct.
Tip #7 – There is a Mystery Pattern Checker
The online Mystery Pattern Checker is released several days after the challenge begins. When classes begin to have predictions about what the final number might be, I’ll post the pattern checker. It works in a unique way. Instead of simply asking for the final number, it asks for the final several numbers in a row. If your class finds the Mystery Number in Day 21 – and understands the pattern – you will be able to complete the Mystery Pattern Checker. Stay tuned for the link.
Tip #8 – Post your experience using #LeapingNumbers
Some of the best posts I’ve seen are pictures of whiteboards or posters that show the thinking – and the connections between numbers.
Tip #9 – Subscribe to my blog and my YouTube channel
This is the best way to receive the most current updates. This will let you know when videos are released, if there is bonus trivia, and when the Mystery Pattern Checker is available. For my blog, there is a subscribe button at the top. You can also subscribe to my YouTube channel here.
Tip #10 – Have fun with it!
This is a mystery, and it’s meant to be very fun!
You get to solve it, too.
You get to enjoy the journey. Enjoy all the moments of wonder and curiosity for yourself as well as your students.
Math is full of joy, and I encourage you to soak in the joy and the mystery!
Tip #11 – Tell a friend about it!
Leaping Numbers is even more fun if there is a class next door – or across the hall – that is also trying to solve the mystery. That’s because you can talk about what you think the mystery number might be.
You can even race to see who can solve it first – and prove that you are correct. You can share ideas with each other and solve it together.
To make all of this possible, tell another teach about Leaping Numbers Season 2.
Then enjoy the journey together.
Tip #12 – Tell me about it!
I would love to hear your predictions. Many teachers, who are on my mailing list, reply to the daily emails with their predictions. I reply to as many as possible. I would love to hear about the wonder and joy in your classroom. Thank you for all you do!
Tip #13 – Remember that this isn’t the only season of Leaping Numbers
If you love Leaping Numbers Season 2, remember that the original Leaping Numbers was a Leap Day Pattern challenge for Leap Day (February 29, 2024). That entire series – sometimes affectionately called Season 0 – is still available and you can find it here.
You can also find videos an tips from the last season, Leaping Numbers Season 1.
Tip #14 – Stay tuned for future seasons!
In the future I’m hoping to release a Leaping Numbers Clickables Season, which includes all of the files for a new season, so you can have all of the materials in your classroom. That would be a lot like bundling an entire season of Leaping Numbers (all of my PowerPoints and/or Google Slides that I use) into a single packet. Stay tuned. I’ll share more when that is closer.
Thank you for participating in Leaping Numbers Season 2!
