The Lattice Discussion

Lattice Pic

I put this together very, very quickly in response to a discussion that included questions about lattice multiplication.  You’ll see me dabbling with three models in order to find the connections among all of them.

I like the area model since it generalizes nicely for mulitplying polynomials later.

I agree, Chris. That model has the greatest utility throughout the years. Polynomials are an excellent example. Thanks for bringing that to light!

My math-liking mom-friend (whose daughter learned the lattice method) *really* appreciated this translation (especially the animated blue lines).

Oh! One more thing… have you considered using creative commons licenses on the things you post and share?

I really enjoyed this. I work with adults and simply hadn’t taken the time to dissect the lattice and area methods. Now when parents ask me about it I can show them this so they can “translate” what they know and be able to help their kiddos 🙂

I’m glad this will be helpful tool for parents and students to understand together!
